Being a stay-at-home mom, I’m always looking for ways to entertain my boys. They are easy going but sometimes they just get bored and I feel bad. It’s been so hot that I haven’t really been taking them outside. I don’t think they’d enjoy almost 100 degrees weather and it’d certainly make me feel miserable! Then my four year old boy suggested that we make some play dough. I knew you could make play dough at home and every time I buy play dough, they always get hard really fast or they are just so darn expensive!
Homemade play dough is much cheaper than store bought ones since you know, it’s homemade! You need some flour and salt, and a few extra ingredients to make these perfectly textured play dough. Cheap. and you can make a lot of it in many different colors.
This play dough is made in a blender (Vitamix). I am loving my Vitamix since I can make so many different things in just a few minutes. If you don’t have a Vitamix, I think that you can probably use a Kitchenaid stand mixer using a dough hook, until the dough becomes play dough textured.
But if you own a blender, then try this recipe for your kids! It’s really easy and only takes two minutes to make each play dough. And it’s so fun for the kids. My four year old added the food coloring into the mix and he loved it! I felt so proud that he was able to help out a little!
In Vitamix container, place warm water, flour, cream of tartar, oil, salt, and food coloring. Turn on the blender, starting from level one and slowly increase the speed to level 10. Blend for 2 minutes, and the sound of the blender will change when the dough is ready. Let cool and repeat for other colors, if desired.
The dough will look like this when it’s ready.
I made four different colors but you can make many different colors.
I made this 4 days ago and the play dough is still in perfect texture. My husband says it’s like marshmallows! :) Seriously, I think it’s the best play dough texture ever and it’s also safe to eat… although I don’t recommend anyone eat this… very salty!
So make play dough for the kids today!
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 cup flour
- 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1 tablespoon oil
- ¼ cup salt
- food coloring
- Combine all ingredients in a Vitamix blender including enough food coloring. Starting from level one, slowly increase the speed to level 10. Blend for 2 minutes, or until the sound of the blender changes when the dough is ready. Let cool before use. Repeat with different colors if desired. Double the recipe if you need a large volume of dough.
