Three Layered Chocolate Bars

Three Layered Chocolate Bars

These bars have been our family favorite for five years now. The first time I made these bars, my husband proclaimed that these bars were his new favorite and that I had to make them as often as I can. Since then, I’ve made these bars every year and this year, we are gifting them to our friends and neighbors.

These bars have three layers: The crust on the bottom, the caramel layer in the middle, and chocolate on top – seriously, the best bars I have ever tasted. The caramel flavored middle layer goes so well with the crust and the chocolate topping. You might think “Oh if there are three layers, it’s probably really hard to make” but no, these bars are actually pretty easy to make. Just take a little while for it to set but totally worth the wait.

Three Layered Chocolate Bars

  • For the bottom layer:
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ⅓ cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • For the caramel middle layer:
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • For the Chocolate top layer:
  • ¾ cup semi chocolate chips (or milk chocolate)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. For the bottom layer:
  3. In medium bowl, mix the ½ cup brown sugar and the butter with a spoon or with an electric mixer on medium speed, for about 30 seconds. Stir in 1 cup flour. (It should be crumbly) In bottom of ungreased 13×9 inch pan, press mixture evenly. Bake for 10 minutes.
  4. For the middle layer:
  5. Meanwhile, in medium bowl, mixx eggs, 1 cup brown sugar, and the vanilla with a spoon. Stir in 2 tablespoons flour, the baking powder, and salt. Stir in chocolate chips . Spread carefully over the crust. Bake 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool about 1 hour until firm.
  6. For the top layer:
  7. In 1 quart saucepan, heat the chocolate chips and oil over low heat, stirring constantly until melted. Pour the sauce on top of the cooled bars evenly using a spatula. Refrigerate 1 hour until hardened and firm. Cut into 8 rows by 4 and store at room temperature.
